Councilmember Hueso and Family Health Centers of San Diego Commemorate National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day by Urging All San Diegans to Know Their HIV Status
Community Groups Come Together to Increase HIV/AIDS Awareness in San Diego’s Latino Community by Hosting 1st Annual National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Health Fair
San Diego, CA- Councilmember Ben Hueso, Family Health Centers of San Diego and local community groups join together on Monday, October 15, 2007 with thousands of civic leaders and community organizations around the country to commemorate National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
- Over 16,000 residents are now living with HIV or AIDS in San Diego County. Every three days a San Diegan with AIDS will die.
- San Diego’s Latino population is disproportionately impacted by this devastating disease. Latinos have the second highest number of cases a year with rates 1 ½ times greater than other groups.
- The proportion of Latinos with less than a year between HIV and AIDS diagnoses has increased significantly over the last 15 years in San Diego. This increase in maybe due to delayed HIV testing or in delayed care seeking after HIV testing.
To commemorate National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, Family Health Centers of San Diego is partnering with over 10 community organizations to host the 1st Annual National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Health Fair. The health fair will include free HIV testing, health information, give-a-ways and more.
Councilmember Hueso and local leaders will highlight community organizations and programs working together to encourage everyone to know their HIV status and help San Diegans living with HIV/AIDS to get into medical care.
