San Diego Community Joins Together to Celebrate Juneteenth
Family Health Centers of San Diego, the Cooper Family, and Ladies Over 40 Host Community Celebration and Healing our Communities Health Fair
San Diego, CA- Family Health Centers of San Diego, the Cooper Family, and Ladies Over 40 are joining together to host the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration and Healing Our Communities Health Fair. Over 2,000 people are expected to attend this well-known community celebration. The festivities include food, live entertainment, a kid zone, health screenings for diabetes, cholesterol, HIV/AIDS, and STDS, and additional health resources in a safe and fun environment.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.
In addition to honoring Juneteenth, the event helps strengthen community ties in a family friendly environment and increases awareness and utilization of the many local health and social services. The event is sponsored by Family Health Centers of San Diego, the Cooper Family, and Ladies Over 40.
