Black Infant Health Awards Highlight Efforts to Reduce Infant Mortality

( San Diego ) African American babies in San Diego are more than twice as likely to die in their first year of life as are their counterparts in other groups.  The San Diego County Black Infant Health Program (BIH), operated by Family Health Centers of San Diego , seeks to reverse that trend through a free program that provides services and education for African American mothers and their babies.

Black Infant Health will celebrate its successes and honor those who have gone above-and-beyond in support of the program at a festive awards luncheon on Wednesday, June 30.

141 pregnant women enrolled in BIH this past year. As a result of the program, 69% of the participating mothers who were abusing drugs or alcohol stopped, 81% of the smokers quit or cut back, 76% breastfed their babies, and 71% completed a recommended number of prenatal doctor visits.  These are all factors that are key to a successful pregnancy and a healthy newborn. ************************************************************************************** WHO: San Diego Black Infant Health Program, a program of Family Health Centers of San Diego
