San Diego’s year-round sunshine allows residents to take advantage of a bounty of outdoor activities at the beach and local parks. Even though the prime summer months are over, the recent heatwave has made outdoor and beach activities even more appealing! While sunlight in the right dose is healthy, failing to adopt proper skin-care habits could lead to sunburns, sun spots and possibly skin cancer.

As summer winds down, we encourage you and your family to enjoy the sun responsibly by following these easy, preventative measures:

  • Wear sunscreen, preferably with an SPF 30 or 45 rating, every day.
  • Apply the sunscreen regularly throughout the day, since sunscreens with a higher SPF doesn’t necessarily equal more protection.
  • Limit the amount of time you spend in direct sunlight by taking breaks indoors, under an umbrella or in the shade.
  • Wear a hat, long-sleeves and sunglasses to help protect yourself from the sun.
  • Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

If you are concerned about a skin condition, please call FHCSD at (619) 515-2300 to make an appointment with one of our medical providers.
