SAN DIEGO, CA – (July 27, 2023) Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) was honored to welcome Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber, M.D., for a tour of the Oak Park Family Health Center and the Laura Rodriguez Medical Assistant Institute (LRMAI). The visit aimed to highlight the critical work carried out by FHCSD in providing comprehensive health care services and the invaluable contributions of LRMAI in nurturing future medical assistants.

During her visit, Dr. Weber had the opportunity to meet and engage in a roundtable with key leadership from FHCSD, including:

  • Pauline Lucatero, Director of Nursing and Director of LRMAI, FHCSD
  • Dr. Lysistrati Alimonos, Assistant Medical Director and OB/GYN, FHCSD
  • Michelle Guzman, Student Services Manager of LRMAI, FHCSD
  • Shea Benton, Director of Government Relations, FHCSD

The tour commenced at the Oak Park Family Health Center, where Dr. Weber witnessed firsthand the exceptional primary care, family health and pediatric services provided to the community. She interacted with the dedicated health care staff who work to address the diverse health care needs of patients and saw the cutting-edge medical facilities that enhance the quality of care.

Subsequently, Dr. Weber visited the Laura Rodriguez Medical Assistant Institute, where she gained insights into LRMAI’s commitment to providing comprehensive training and education to aspiring medical assistants and addressing critical workforce shortages. Dr. Weber had the opportunity to learn about the institute’s comprehensive curriculum and their efforts to create a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

Dr. Weber engaged in a dynamic conversation with FHCSD leadership about the challenges and opportunities in the health care sector, particularly in underserved communities. The participants shared their perspectives on improving health care accessibility, enhancing patient outcomes, and addressing health care workforce shortages.
