Advanced Practice Provider Residency Program

Family Health Centers of San Diego’s Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Residency Program is a 12-month educational program for recently-graduated nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The program offers a unique salaried opportunity to improve clinical skills and prepare for a career in community medicine. The program will prepare APPs to manage complex care of patients in a multi-cultural, socioeconomically diverse population. Participants will develop the integrative skills needed to practice in a Patient-Centered Medical Home in a medically underserved community.

The 2024-2025 cohort is open specifically to family nurse practitioners. Four positions will be available for the 12-month program. Salary during the program is $100,000 annually with an increase after program completion to $125,000. Full-time employment at FHCSD is required. Candidates must be willing to commute to any of FHCSD’s primary care locations.

Core Training

  • Orientation
  • Precepted clinical sessions
  • Didactics, journaling, case write-ups and other clinical projects
  • Rotations/independent practice
  • Close mentorship from experienced clinicians
  • Ongoing evaluation to improve individual performance as well as enhance patient care

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a recent graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program with less than two years of clinical experience.
  • Have a California driver’s license.
  • Complete national certification prior to program start.
  • Be eligible for Drug Enforcement Administration license.
  • Demonstrate commitment to special populations/underserved communities.
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural-competence and sensitivity.
  • Speak English plus Spanish, Arabic, Pashto, Dari/Farsi, Haitian Creole or others.*
  • Commit to a two-year contract with FHCSD upon successful completion of the APP Residency Program.
*Not required, but strongly desired.
