Important: Applicants must pass their national certification examinations before submitting an application. It is strongly recommended that you schedule your exam as early as possible to ensure eligibility.

Interview process
- Initial phone screenings: Mid-August 2026
- In-person interviews: Late August to early September 2026
- Personal statements required for selected candidates
- Acceptance offers made following interviews
- Program start date: November 2, 2026
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must:
- Be a recent graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner or physician assistant program with less than two years of professional clinical experience
- Be a graduate of a Family Nurse Practitioner program (NP applicants)
- Be willing to provide full-scope primary care across the lifespan
- Have a California driver’s license
- Pass national certification examinations before submitting an application
- Be eligible for DEA licensure
- Demonstrate a commitment to serving medically underserved communities
- Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity
- Commit to a three-year employment term with FHCSD, including the 12-month residency program and two years of employment following program completion
- Be willing to commute to any FHCSD primary care location

Salary and benefits
Annual salary
Residents receive a competitive salary and benefits package while completing the 12-month program.

Upon successful completion of the residency program, participants transition into provider positions at FHCSD and continue their employment commitment for an additional two years.
