Required documentation

Applicants must submit:

After application review, selected applicants may receive an additional questionnaire before phone interviews are scheduled.

Important: Applicants must pass their national certification examinations before submitting an application. It is strongly recommended that you schedule your exam as early as possible to ensure eligibility.

The deadline for applications is August 10, 2026.

Interview process

  • Initial phone screenings: Mid-August 2026
  • In-person interviews: Late August to early September 2026
    • Personal statements required for selected candidates
  • Acceptance offers made following interviews
  • Program start date: November 2, 2026

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a recent graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner or physician assistant program with less than two years of professional clinical experience
  • Be a graduate of a Family Nurse Practitioner program (NP applicants)
  • Be willing to provide full-scope primary care across the lifespan
  • Have a California driver’s license
  • Pass national certification examinations before submitting an application
  • Be eligible for DEA licensure
  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving medically underserved communities
  • Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity
  • Commit to a three-year employment term with FHCSD, including the 12-month residency program and two years of employment following program completion
  • Be willing to commute to any FHCSD primary care location

Salary and benefits

Annual salary

Residents receive a competitive salary and benefits package while completing the 12-month program.

Upon successful completion of the residency program, participants transition into provider positions at FHCSD and continue their employment commitment for an additional two years.
