Program Curriculum

The APP Residency Program is a 12-month transition-to-practice program that combines clinical training, structured education and individualized mentorship. Residents work closely with experienced clinicians to develop the skills needed to manage complex patient needs in a multicultural, socioeconomically diverse population.

The curriculum includes orientation, clinical training, specialty rotations, didactics, wellness activities, special projects and ongoing performance evaluation. While the curriculum may evolve based on program and resident needs, the information below provides an overview of the training experience.

Orientation

The first week of the program is dedicated to orientation. Residents receive an introduction to FHCSD, organizational policies and procedures, the electronic health record and program expectations.

Clinical training

Residents participate in a variety of clinical experiences designed to build skills, confidence and independence over time. Clinical responsibilities gradually increase throughout the program as residents gain experience and competency.

Residency clinic

Residents manage their own patient panels under the supervision of a dedicated preceptor. Patient volume gradually increases throughout the year, beginning with approximately one patient per hour and progressing as residents develop clinical skills and confidence.

Continuity clinic

Designed to support the transition to independent practice, continuity clinic allows residents to provide patient care independently one to two days per week at various FHCSD locations. Experienced mentors are available for consultation on complex cases. Residents begin this experience after gaining familiarity with FHCSD workflows and clinical practices.

Specialty rotations

Residents participate in specialty rotations to gain exposure to a variety of clinical services offered throughout FHCSD. All residents complete rotations in:

  • Pediatrics
  • Women’s health and family planning

Additional specialty rotations and learning experiences may vary by year.

Training sites

FHCSD operates more than 90 locations throughout San Diego County. All APP Residency Program training takes place at FHCSD sites.

Didactics

Residents participate in weekly educational sessions covering clinical topics, evidence-based practice, professional development and primary care skills.

Wellness

The program promotes resident well-being through periodic wellness activities designed to support personal wellness, resilience and team building.

Special projects

Residents may participate in projects focused on improving patient experience, clinical outcomes or quality improvement initiatives. Project opportunities vary from year to year.

Weekly schedule

Residents’ schedules evolve throughout the program as they gain experience and rotate through different clinical settings. Training activities and clinical responsibilities are adjusted to support progressive learning and increasing independence.
