EL CAJON, Calif. — Aug. 8, 2026 — Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) recently hosted the East County Community Health Fair to help children and families learn about health care and provide access and awareness of local services. The event was sponsored by Blue Shield of California and brought together families, health care workers and other community groups.
A total of 176 people attended the event, including 111 children and 65 adults. Upon arrival, attendees received a registration form, allowing them to request appointments for FHCSD services, along with a children’s goodie bag. The attendees had the chance to connect with multiple local community organizations to learn about the wide range of services and programs available to them in their community.
Several local groups joined the event, including the YMCA, Survivors of Torture, San Diego State University WIC, Holistic Afghan Women Association, Cuyamaca College, El Cajon Library, License to Freedom and Somali Family Services. Refugee families connected with local organizations that provided valuable information, resources, and support services available throughout the community.
The San Diego Bike Club hosted a bike rodeo where more than 60 children learned about bike safety, rode through a bicycle course and practiced safe riding skills. For some participants, the event marked their first time riding a bike, and the club handed out free bike helmets to support continued bike safety.
Families could also ask for health care appointments. In total, 56 appointments were requested, including 22 back-to-school physicals for children. In total, the event had 51 more attendees than the previous year.
Victoriano Diaz, Director, Patient Engagement and Enrollment, highlighted the importance that community-oriented events had for those able to attend.
“Events like the East County Community Health Fair are about more than providing services for one day. They create opportunities for families to connect with healthcare, community resources, and programs that can support their well-being year-round. We are grateful to Blue Shield of California and our community partners for helping us make these resources accessible to the families who need them most.”
Family Health Centers of San Diego will continue its community outreach efforts throughout the year with several upcoming events. These include the annual Hallo-Wellness Health Fair, which provides families with health education, community resources, preventive health services, and seasonal activities in a fun and welcoming environment.
FHCSD will also host ¡Vive tu Vida! Get Up! Get Moving! on Saturday, October 10. One of the region’s largest family-focused health and wellness events, the gathering is now in its 20th year and brings together hundreds of families, community organizations, health care providers and local partners. Attendees can participate in free health screenings, fitness activities and health education, as well as visit resource booths and enjoy giveaways, live entertainment and family-friendly activities. The event connects residents with important health care services while promoting wellness, physical activity and community engagement.
