In response to a nationwide surge in measles cases, Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) hosted two walk-in community vaccination clinics on Saturday, May 31, 2025. The events were generously sponsored by Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan and Community Health Group.

So far in 2025, more than 1,000 confirmed measles cases have been reported across the country — a significant increase from just 285 cases in all of 2024. San Diego County’s measles vaccination rate for kindergarten students also declined last year, falling below the threshold needed for herd immunity. Measles is highly contagious, and vaccination is the most effective way to prevent it from spreading. Two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine are 97% effective in protecting against measles.

“With measles cases on the rise, it is more important than ever to protect our communities — especially our children — through timely vaccination,” said Dr. Thao Tran, chief medical officer for FHCSD. “The walk-in vaccination events at our Logan Heights and El Cajon clinics helped remove barriers to care and made it easier for families to stay healthy.”

At Saturday’s events, FHCSD medical professionals administered a total of 537 vaccines, including the MMR vaccine and other standard childhood vaccinations. More than 240 children were vaccinated, with many receiving multiple vaccines to get up to date on their recommended schedules. In addition to providing vaccines, the events were designed to be festive and family-friendly, offering toys, a raffle for bikes with helmets and $50 gift cards after vaccination.

“My children are going into kindergarten and TK next year, and just like any other year, they need their updates. I would hate to see my kids suffering,” shared one mother attending the Logan Heights vaccination clinic.
