The open enrollment period for Covered California began on November 1, 2015 and continues through January 31, 2016. Covered California is a program that provides brand-name health insurance for California residents under the Affordable Care Act. The cost of each plan under the program is based on certain factors, including family size and income.
Though every Covered California health insurance plan is different, some insured benefits are offered by each, including:
- Hospitalization (such as surgery) and emergency care
- Maternity and prenatal care
- Mental health and substance abuse treatment
- Prescription drugs
- Preventative and wellness services (such as cholesterol, depression and HIV screening)

For the past two years, FHCSD has exceeded enrollment expectations for Covered California and Medi-Cal. During the first year of Covered California open enrollment (2013-14), FHCSD enrolled more individuals than any other organization in Southern California! FHCSD continued this successful trend last year, becoming the first organization in Southern California to meet, and exceed, goals. This included answering over 9,000 phone calls and enrolling more than 1,500 new applicants in Covered California. FHCSD was also one of the top organizations in the state for Covered California and Medi-Cal applicants.

Do you not qualify for health insurance?
At Family Health Centers of San Diego, we never turn a patient away from care because of an inability to pay. In fact, we now have a reduced fee-per-initial-medical-visit of only $25 for those who qualify. Reducing our initial per-visit-fee lets more patients access the high-quality care our patients have come to expect from FHCSD, as well as continues to further FHCSD’s mission of providing affordable and accessible care to all San Diegans.
