LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader Designation
Family Health Centers of San Diego received their “LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader” designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC). The designation was awarded in the 11th edition of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). As the only community clinic in San Diego to receive the designation, we are honored to be recognized for our exceptional work in ensuring culturally competent care to the LGBTQ community.
You can read more about it on our website.

Family Medicine Residency Training Program Enters its Fourth Year
Our Teaching Health Center Residency Training Program graduates six new family medicine doctors each year at City Heights Family Health Center, most of whom remain to practice at one of our 23 clinics. Since the inception, medical residents have provided more than 21,000 patient visits and logged more than 16,000 hours of service.
FHCSD is dedicated to providing a diverse group of tomorrow’s doctors with high-quality, broad-based clinical education and experience. We invite you to learn more about a few of our residents and consider making a financial contribution to help sustain this costly, but important program.
Ways You Can Help
Family Health Centers is always trying to improve our programs and services to better serve our patients. If you would like to help in this mission, we are currently looking for the following donations:
- A small, new or used recreational vehicle to go into the community to provide individuals with harm reduction education, case management, referrals to drug treatment and detoxification services and one-for-one syringe exchange
- New or gently loved children’s books for the Reach Out and Read Program
- New or gently loved baby items and disposable diapers for the Baby Boutique
- Twin size blankets, socks, shower shoes, personal size hygiene products, new pillows, adult undergarments and multi-blade razors for the temporary homeless shelters.
You can also volunteer your time at one of our upcoming Spirit of the Barrio luncheons.
Eighth Dental Clinic Now Open in Hillcrest
As part of FHCSD’s mission to provide comprehensive care to all of our patients, we have integrated dental clinics into several of our locations. We recently opened our eighth dental clinic at Hillcrest on Third Avenue. The clinic has full-time hours to meet the needs of our patients at this site.

Exceptional in Every Way! – A Patient Testimonial from Rice Family Health Center
“From the moment we started with FHCSD, we were treated with the best service in every way. Our first visit was at the mobile clinic located at Vista Square Elementary School. Nurse Practitioner Amy Rosenbloom was the most caring provider. She saved my husband’s life. She was able to diagnose my husband’s life-threatening status, something his previous doctor failed to do. It turns out that he was suffering with diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol and plantar fasciitis. Apparently, my husband had been suffering with diabetes for years, he just didn’t know.”
Stories like this remind us why we continue to provide caring, affordable, high-quality health care and supportive services to all people.
FHCSD Welcomes UnitedHealthcare
We would like to recognize UnitedHealthcare for their support and involvement with FHCSD and extend a special thank you to Monique Knight, who has been crucial to developing the relationship with FHCSD. UnitedHealthcare is a sponsor of our regular Spirit of the Barrio luncheon series and was one of the first to support our Spirit of East County. Monique continuously strengthens our programs for new mothers with her ideas and support. We are excited about building this relationship and the endless opportunities for future growth.
